Escher's son, George, found the grasshopper and brought it home to his father. When Escher saw its incredible design he knew he had to make it into an artwork.

Grasshopper, Scarabs, Cobwebs, and Covered Alley were printed in De Graphicus M.C. Escher by G.H.‘s-Gravesande, Halcyon 3-4, The Hague, 1940.
