Lion of the Fountain in the Piazza at Ravello

The statue of a lion in a fountain in Ravello is unlike other Escher artworks. The source of its inspiration is more romantic than one might imagine. It was there in Ravello that Escher met Jetta, his future wife. She took a photo of Escher sitting at the Piazza Fontana Moresca and this photo was later used as the reference for the lithograph.
