Escher's self-portrait is one of his first lithographs. He peers at us with the intensity of someone searching out mystery and wonder. At age 31 he was too young to know what he is looking for is deep inside him. It is a few years before he unleashes the full power of his creativity on the world. The next time we see that face it will be stretched across a reflecting sphere.
